Assessment of English Vocabulary Breadth and Depth

本文旨在系统地梳理英语词汇的测评方式,并对其优缺点进行分析。经梳理发现,英语词汇测评,测评方式、测评题型多种多样,但是大体可以分为两种类型,即词汇宽度和深度的测评。没有一种测评方式能够全面地检测学习者对词汇的掌握情况。在实际测评时,应该根据不同的测评目的选择不同的测评方式。

This paper is undertaken to sort through various assessment formats of English vocabulary and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of these assessment formats. It is found that although assessment of English vocabulary could be carried out in different formats, it can be briefly classified into two categories, namely, assessment of vocabulary breadth and vocabulary depth. No single assessment format could draw a comprehensive picture of learners＇ vocabulary. Thus, vocabulary assessment format should be chosen according to different assessment purposes.
