As the publication of textbooks is a very profitable business, modem textbook publishers have regardedtbe publication as an important source of profits. In order to achieve the minimal interests, all partiesoncerned maximize theircompetitive advantages with every conceivable means. As a result, the game is becoming intense and tends to cause terrible disorder. This paper attempts to apply game theory models such as" pigs' payoffs" and "prisoner' s dilemma" to the analysis of the cut - throat and disorderly competition of textbook publishing among China's private publishers in early modern China and provide insights for conemporary publishing industry.
