The majority of the female figures in Chinese classical literature are beautiful, talented, gentle and obedient, but not independent in personality as well as in psycholoty. However, Shi Naian, in his masterpiece Outlaws of the Marsh, created quite a few brand new figures, such as Gu Dasao, Sun Erniang and Hu Sanniang. With a comparison of the appearances and inner hearts between the three characters and those in Chinese classical literature, it can be concluded that these three female characters reflected a great change in the Chinese literary history, in that the female figures were no longer the subsidiary of male - dominated culture due to the lack of the sense of subjectivity, which is a mark of the early feminist consciousness and literary transformation.
