"Qiong Er Hou Gong" put forward by Ouyang Xiu (which literally means that from poverty and adversity come great masterpieces) is a well-known proposition in the literary field. Rich in connotative meaning, it not only reflects the true feelings and noble character of the literary intelligentsia but also incorporates the pur- suits of artistic beauty, covering all the requirements for literary creations, that is, "truth, virtue and beauty". If the connotation of this proposition is decoded in the background of the "Innovation of Poetry and Prose Movement" in the Northern Song Dynasty, it can be found that this proposition was put forward as a result of the decadence of literary styles in the early Song Dynasty and moreover it was based on the advocacy of pragmatism in literature.
