An Empirical Study of Chinese English Learners’ Acquisition of the Discourse Marker you know

摘要 本研究采用中国英语学习者口语语料库(SECCL)和英语本族语者口语语料库(SBCSAE)对比分析法,并结合问卷调查,收集英语专业本科生共26个调查样本,考察中国英语学习者习得话语标记语you know及其各语用功能的情况。结果发现:1)中国英语学习者话语标记语you know的产出频率与英语本族语者的使用频率存在显著差异。与本族语者相比,中国学习者总体明显过少使用you know;2)学习者对you know的语用功能掌握不全,仅能常用其"强调标示语"和"迟疑标示语"功能;3)you know各具体标示功能的内在认知难度与学习者对相应功能的语用产出呈显著正相关。 This study compares the use of discourse marker (DM) you know and its various functions in the learner corpus (SECCL) with those in a native - speaker corpus (SBCSAE) , accompanied by a questionnaire survey carried out on 26 English majors assessing the learners' receptive comprehension of the various functions of you know. The findings show that 1) significant differences exist in use between Chinese English learners and native speakers, and, on an overall basis, Chinese learners significantly underuse the DM you know in comparison with the native speakers; 2) Chinese learners have an inadequate command of the functions of you know, and they are only capable of using the emphasizing function and hesitation function; 3) the learners' pragmatic production of you know is significantly affected by their understanding of its various functions, and the more difficult the function is in cognition, the less frequently it is used.
