Just as the name ofWu Ge (Songs of Wu) suggests, Wu Ge originates from the Wu region, roughly the present areas of Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou in Jiangsu Province, part of Huzhou and Jiaxing in Zhejiang Province and part of Shanghai. Consequently, the Wu dialect, a significant representation of the Wu Ge's regional features, has a direct influence upon it. The features of Wu C,e in music form or pattern are as follows : its melody is mainly of pentatonic scale and the modal register doesn't range widely. Naturally, Wu Ge, which takes the life of the water country as its singing objects, has strikingly regional features. As a result, many cultural symbols rich with regional features enter the songs.
