OUTLINE/Modern opera directors are often inclined to use'new bottles'to store'old wine.'In other words, they use new directional concepts on well-known classics, giving them a new lease of life. Clearly, not all'new bottles'are appropriate. It all depends on whether the libretto and musical score allow for such room to explore and discover. Some operas based on realism amd historical figures do not lend themselves to new interpretations.
