Exploratory and exploitative innovations can make firms act strategically with initiative because of their tight connections with strategies ex ante. But the relationships between the two innovations are harmonized and balanced hardly because they are different innovation ways in character and compete with limited resources. Using samples of 251 firms in China, an empirical model based on moderating effect of slack resource which tested the impact of exploratory and exploitative innovation on firm performance was verified. The results show that exploratory and exploitative innovations have positive effect on firm performance and play different roles on growth and profitability, and the balance between them can promote performance effectively, and that slack resources can moderate differently relationships between the two innovations and performance, and thus, when absorbed and unabsorbed slack are at high levels, or are made use of sufficiently, the two innovations can be synthesized or balanced to promote performance distinctly.
