人物画自元代开始，已呈下降趋势，到明代更是每况愈下。正如明人谢肇制在《五杂俎》中说：“今人画以意趣为宗，不复画人物及故事。”清徐沁《明画录》记载，在明画家八百五十五人中除一些山水、花鸟画家兼善人物外，主攻人物画的仅九十六人。
