自改革开放以来,我国的奶业发展突飞猛进。1997年,全国的荷斯坦奶牛和改良奶牛达447万头,牛奶总产量663万吨,乳制品总产量51.23万吨,分别比1978年增长8.3倍、6.5倍和10倍;奶山羊产奶量106.3万吨,比1978年增长12倍;全国人均占有奶量6.6公斤。20年来牛头数和牛奶产量在大多数年份里,都以两位数高速增长,是建国以来我国奶业发展的黄金时期。
