This article, on the basis of the corpus of English film and TV show transcripts, investigates the "here / there + we / you + go / are" idioms commonly found in spoken English from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. It argues that various meanings of the idioms can be traced back to human' s spatial experience and, hence, schematic image of source - path - destination. Meanwhile, the variation of their forms and partial meaning expansions can be accounted for by the construal operations in the conceptualization process, eg. , attention, force dynamics and perspective. The article then classifies the idioms' four sets of metaphorical interpretations under the semantic mapping mechanism. Overall, the article reinforces the theory that spatial experience comes as the ultimate source for semantic representations and meaning is nothing but conceptualization.
