Working Memory and Simultaneous Interpreting Performance:A Report on Empirical Research Among Chinese Interpreters of English

摘要工作记忆能力是影响同声传译的一项重要认知素质。通过实验研究程序,本项研究证实,工作记忆能力与同传效果存在显著的相关性。同等条件下,工作记忆能力越强,同传效果也越好。同时,记忆资源的协调效率要比有限的记忆容量能够更好地解释同传效果,而且这一特点随着口译水平不断提高而日趋明显。 Working memory （WM） capacity constitutes an essential cognitive quality affecting simultaneous interpreting （SI）. Based on experimental procedures, the present study confirms the significant correlation between WM and SI, higher WM leading to better SI＇ s performance. Besides, the present study concludes that WM＇ s allocation efficiency can better predict SI＇ s performance than WM＇ s bruited amount, a phenomenon getting more outstanding with higher SI practice level.
