Sides of the Same Coin-Isolationism and Unilateralism

作为美国外交政策史上的两大流派,孤立主义与单边主义从表面上看有着不同的内容和特征,代表了两种不同的诉求,但实际上,二者殊途同归,是一脉相承的,都是美国保守的政治文化思潮在外交领域的体现。二者都以维护美国的国家利益为第一要务,以美国的国家实力为政策基点,只不过各自打上了不同时代的烙印而已。从本质上来讲,单边主义是孤立主义外交传统在当代美国的一种新的表现形式。

As two major Schools in the history of American foreign policy, Isolationism and Unilateralism are seemingly different both in content and feature, which represent two different demands. However, they are indeed the sides of the same coin because both of them are the reflections of American foreign policy under the impact of the protective thoughts in American Politics and its culture. Taking the American national benefits as first priority and based their policies on the national strength , they are different only under the name of times, but in essence, Unilateralism is only a new form of the traditional Isolationism in contemporary America.
