Buddhism introduced into Japan from China and Japanese primitive faiths both involve weird themes. The overlapping of the religious faiths laid the cultural foundation for the Japanese love for weird fiction. The introduction into Japan of the Ming and Qing fiction and related theories gave rise to the wide circulation of weird fiction in Japan. On the other hand, Hyakumonogatari in Japan also promoted the fiction's development. Enlightened by the Chinese ideology of "writing for venting one's spite", Japanese novelists were inclined to express the protagonists' resentment with the aid of traditional "evil spirits".
