Seppuku is a way of suicide starting from the Heian period in Japan, limited to samurai class. As a unique symbol in Japanese culture, foreigners hold it as a barbaric act of self- mutilation. However, the Japanese regard it as a decent and noble death for warriors. It embodies the samurai' s dignity, courage and loyalty and the inner tranquility with detachment of life and death.
