无尾两栖类呼吸系统发生于第14～第16时期,鳃弓形成后,渐次形成外鳃、鳃盖、内鳃,在内鳃发生的同时,外鳃鳃丝退化,最终消失,鳃弓上被内鳃取代.无尾两栖类呼吸系统发生的时期、发展的速度、发展形式以及外鳃的形态,都不相同,这主要由于种间差异所造成.
