An Analysis on Polysemy from the Perspective of Iconicity

从认知和历时的角度研究语言象似性在词义演变过程的作用。通过对一词多义历时演变方式的分析,发现词汇的基本义和衍生义之间存在着直接或间接的理据关系,表现为象似性。这种象似性以事物之间多种相像关系为依据,是隐喻产生的基础。在词义演变过程中,人们利用隐喻达到词义的引申。

The article tries to investigate, from the perspective of cognitive linguistics and dlachromc linguistics, how iconicity affects the semantic changing of a word. The analysis on the two models of semantic changing in a polysemic word reveals that there exist motivations, direct or indirect, between a word＇s source meaning and its derivative meanings. Iconicity is the one among the motivations. It displays similarities of two things, on the basis of which generates metaphor. In the process of semantic changing in apolysemic word, metaphor is widely used to get more derivative meanings. The research on iconicity in polysemy is quite instructive and enlightening in the teaching and studying of English vocabulary, the compilation of bilingual dictionaries as well.
