To examine the relationship between diabetes mellitus(DM,type Ⅰ and Ⅱ)or its chronic complications and acetylator phenotypes in Chinese population and clarify whether the acetylator status could be a genetic susceptible factor for DM or its chronic complications. A total of 108 Chinese diabetics were included. Significant differences in the proportion of fast or slow acetylators were observed between typeⅠ(92.3% or 7.7%) or type Ⅱ (87.8% or 12.2%) DM and control (73.4% or 26.6%). The odds ratio (OR) was 4.35 and 2.61 for fast acetylators or 0.23 and 0.38 for slow ones respectively. The mean AFMU/1X was lower in fast acetylators with neuropathy or cardiopathy than in those without them. Linear correlation of acetylation rate upon age, onset -age,clinical course and plasma fructosamine level in fast acetylators was observed but not in slow acetylators. The acetylate status may be one of the genetic factors that influence the susceptibility to diabetic neuropathy or diabetic cardiopathy, and change with age, onset-age,clinical course or blood fructosamine level in some way.
