OUTLINE/Anyone who has watched the film The Red Violin would be impressed by its film score written by American composer John Corigliano,an Oscarwinning composer of classical music after Erich Korngold and Aaron Copland.The composer has written dramatic scores for another two films:Altered States(1980) and Revolution(1985).The upcoming crime thriller Edge of Darkness(2010),which stars Mel Gibson,will be Corigliano's fourth foray into original film score.In addition to film music,the composer has written one grand opera,The Ghosts of Versailles, which premiered on December 19 1991 at the Metropolitan Opera.It was a big hit almost 20 years ago:tickets of all its first seven performances were sold out within days.But regrettably,the composer's only opera,which was originally planned to be return to the Met in its 2009-10 season,was cancelled due to the current financial woes.It is a great pity that The Ghosts of Versailles does not exist as a DVD.
