The International Development of Therapeutic Landscapes

The major theories of how the therapeutic landscape process occurs and supporting research are discussed. Research has shown that exposure to natural environments ameliorates stress and improves clinical outcomes and mental well-being Most work has concentrated on the benefits of contact with nature in institutional seltings. This has limited societal understanding and reduced the implementation of restorative landscapes. The therapeulic landscape should be extrapolated from the institutional selling to the public realm. All the articles on therapeutic landscape to be published in Chinese Landscape Architecture are examined for key ideas and themes. These include： the state of therapeutic landscapes in different countries; the need for greater implementation of therapeutic landscapes in China; the use of case studies to illustrate exemplary therapeutic landscapes, the wide range of client groups for therapeutic landscapes; the fact that higher levels of engagement in therapeutic landscapes yield higher levels of benefits; the need for comprehensive and cohesive guidelines for the design of therapeutic landscapes and the need for more research in the field of therapeutic and restorative landscapes and in horticultural therapy. The paper ends with a perspective on the requirements for future researchers to develop this field further.
