SIYANG County in northern Jiangsu Province,former capi-tal of the mysterious Sishui Kingdom(113 BC-AD 9),fell into oblivion in subsequent centuries. The area did not return to prominence until 1979,when the People’s Daily,the leading newspaper in China,carried an article describing Siyang’s unique abil-ity to produce the nation’s fastest grow-ing poplar trees.
