In a recent online poll held on the Sina website, ,Yuan Longping （袁隆平）,the ＂Father of Hybrid Rice,＂ was named the most important economic figure in China over the past 60 years. As an agricultural scientist, Yuan developed the first hybrid rice varieties in China back in the 1970s, yielding 30% more grain per unit than common varieties. Food produced from the rice he invented yields extra rice equivalent to the food needs of 80 million people.
