Chen Xingshen(1911-2004),whose name can also be written as Shiing-shen Chern,was born in Jiaxing in Zhejiang province.He moved to Tianjin in 1922 to be with his father,and in 1926 he started studying at Nankai University,then undertook graduate studies at Tsing Hua University,Peking.He was the only graduate student in mathematics to enter the university in 1930,but during his four years there he not only studied widely in projective differential geometry,but also began to publish his own papers on the topic.
