中国经济和科技均曾领先世界,但在近代落伍了。面对帝国主义列强的侵略,中国人被迫"师夷长技以制夷",开始向西方学习。洋务教育就是在这种背景下中国部分人士的艰难选择。

While taking lead in world economy and technology in the beginning,China falls backward in the face of aggressions of the empires.Chinese,however,are forced to learn from the west.It is under that circumstance that Chinese make the reluctant choice of the foreign affairs.
