The Zuo Zongtang Group in the Time of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom

清朝中兴名臣之一的左宗棠,用人不拘一格,偏重于才,形成了以他为核心,包括郭嵩焘、蒋益澧、刘典、王錱、胡光墉、杨昌浚、刘松山、王德榜等在内的相当规模的一个人才集团,这个集团,因镇压太平天国起义之功而官至总督、巡抚者5人,官至提督者3人,几乎可与曾国藩集团、胡林翼集团、李鸿章集团并驾齐驱,为镇压太平军与捻军作出了巨大贡献,也为此后清朝的政治格局带来了深刻影响。

Zuo Zongtang （1812-1885） was one of the most famous imperial minister in the time of the Qing Dynasty（1644-1911）. He laid particular stress on talents. He followed no set pattern in absorbing talented people and thus formed a giant group of talents around him, including Guo Songtao, Jiang Yili, Liu Dian, Wang Xin, Hu Guangyong, Yang Changjun, Liu Songshan and Wang Debang, etc. Because of the success in suppressing the uprising of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom （1851-1864）, his members of the group received repetitive promotions; 5 persons were promoted to viceroys or provincial governors, 3 persons to commander-in-chief. The group stayed even with the Zeng Guofan Group, Hu Linli Group and Li Hongzhang Group. It made great contribution in suppressing the Taiping Army, bringing about radical influence on the political pattern of the Qing Dynasty afterwards.
