Huannan Zi had more than ten book names during its spread for one thousand years. After its completion the book was named Honglie by Liu An, the King of Huainan, aiming at boasting his achievement. Later, Liu the middle part and the Xiang changed the name into Huainan and divided the book into the inner part, outer part. The inner part refers to Honglie, so Ban Gu named it Nieshu or Huainannei in Han Shu. Since the mid-late period of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the book had been known as Huainan Zi and listed in Zi Shu. There were also other names, such as Huainan Shu, Huainan Ji, Liu An Zi in works of scholars. From Wei and Jin Dynasties, Honglie and Huainan were synthesized into one name as Huainan Honglie. Somebody misclassified Gao You's Honglie Jie as Liu An's work. As a result, Huainan Honglie Jie was equated with Huainan Zi by scholars of Song and Ming Dynasties.
