摘要
怀特海作为杰出的哲学家和数学家,在教育思想领域也独树一帜。其教育名著《教育的目的》一书,由六篇论文和两篇附录构成,着重从教育的目的出发,论述了教育过程中应把握的节奏,自由与纪律的关系,古典课程与现代课程的协调以及大学教育管理的诸多建议。这些深刻的思考和独到的见解不仅成为流行国际的"过程教育"的先声,而且给予当时英国的教育以认真的总结与批判,体现了作者从多年教育实践中得出的经验以及基于这些经验的价值思考。
Alfred N. Whitehead, a distinguished mathematician and philosopher, had his unique thoughts on education, which were fully expressed in his educational masterpiece The Aims of Education. The book with six essays and two appendices elaborates on the rhythm of the educational process, the relationship between freedom and discipline, the coordination between classical and modem courses, and the management of a university from the purpose of education. Those ideas, or rather profound insights derived from many years of education practice, have not only become the precursor of "process education", but also served as a good review and criticism of the British education at that time.
