An important theme of Yu Qiuyu＇s essays is the examination of the cultural persona of Chinese intellectuals in different historical periods and a call for the sound persona of contemporary intellectuals. The cultural persona of intellectuals described by Yu Qiuyu is somewhat nurtured by the spiritual elements of Eastern Zhejiang＇s regional culture, whose core maxim is ＂Seeking the applicability of learning as well as the truth and functionality of practical matters＂. Such a core maxim has been inherited by Yu Qiuyu in his life design and choice, as manifested in his emphasis on sound persona and intellectuals＇ ability to manipulate their life in reality.
