Mark Twain ' s masterpiece The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is traditionally regarded as a great work to criticize the stale social conventions. However, readers are liable to neglect the importance and necessity of social conventions. A deep analysis shows that they can be a criterion to establish and distinguish identities, an essential requirement for the social acceptance and an importance means to retain and arouse desires.
