The Role of Zhang Yuanji in the Construction of China's Public Libraries

为了"扶助教育""开启民智",张元济以敢为人先的精神,创立了通艺学堂图书馆、涵芬楼和东方图书馆,后又协助其学生创建了合众图书馆,使图书从私家藏阅成为开放借阅的资源,因此说,他是中国公共图书馆建设的先驱之一。

As a means of support to education and enlightenment of common people,Zhang Yuanji originally set up such libraries as Tongyi Study Hall,Hanfen Building and Oriental Library,and later helped his students start Hezhong Library.This practice enabled the change of role of the library from a place for private collection of books to a public place for reading.Therefore,Zhang Yuanji ranks as one of the important pioneers in the construction of China s public libraries.
