Red earth hills are extensively distributed in the tropical and subtropical zones of China, which occupy 227% of the total land area. Models for traditional farming practices are double cropping of rice, winter green manure or rapes or winter fallow. Maize has been planted since historical times in the region, but its development was very slow, particularly following the double cropping of rice, maize was pushed out. However, the inadequacy of fodders has restricted the development of animal husbandry. Conditions for planting maize in the region are advantageous. According to traditional plant models, maize can be planted on gentle slopes, dry farmland and part of irrigated fields where water, fertilizer and labor force are defict. In these areas, rotation of paddy and dryland farming, and intercropping of dryland farming can be practised to develop maize production. The establishment of a triple complex structure model of cerealseconomic cropsfodder can not only facilitate rational utilization efficiency of agricultural resources but also promote livestock development and increase farmers' income. If rotational farming can be practised by means of new models in alternating with more suitable traditional models, soil nutrient balance can be maintained and sustainable production capability can be improved.
