句子的功能就是句子的作用或用途。句子的"句法-语义"结构和句子的功能是相关的概念,句子的结构是句子功能得以实现的基础,句子的功能影响着结构的配置和选择。句子主要有三大功能:表意功能,交际功能,组篇功能。句子的表意功能指句子表现其内容的功能,体现在句子和思想、感情等的关系上,也体现在与思想有关的思维形式和认知方式的关系上。句子的交际功能指句子传达交际信息的功能,主要表现为传达句子语用目的(用途)的功能和信息处理的功能。句子的组篇功能指组句成篇的功能,表现为句子在大于句子的话语单位(句群、段落、篇章)中的地位和作用上,以及充当句群结构成分的能力上。

Sentence functions are sentence uses, the related notions being syntactic semantic structure and function. The structure is the basis of the realization of the function, and the function affects the collocation and choice of the structure. A sentence has three functions： express an idea, communicate, organise a text. The expressive function is the function of expressing the semantic content of the sentence, which is embodied in relation of the sentence to thought, emotion, as well as in relation of thinking form to the way of recognition. The communicative function is the function of expressing communicative information, which mainly includes pragmatic purpose conveying function and information processing function. The textual function is the function of text organizing, which is embodied in the status and usage of the sentence the capability of acting as component of in a group, a paragraph or an article and in a text.
