East of Eden is regarded as another creation peak of Steinbeck after The Grapes of Wrath. In the novel, Steinbeck attempts to present hope and belief for humanity. However, both the hereditary fatalism and environmental determinism run through the whole novel reveal his pessimism and naturalistic tendency. And they fully display Steinbeck's psychological perplexity.
