A Biography of Niu Tianci:An Autobiographical Text by Lao She

《牛天赐传》是一部成长小说,在某种意义上,这是老舍处理个人生命经验的文本,是老舍戴着牛天赐的面具,对自己的精神世界的速写。老舍在这篇小说中,可能比在散文、自传性作品中更为真实地讲述了自己童年的经验。在老舍为数不多的回忆童年生活的文字里,仍能找到两种基本的心理意向:被弃和得救。《牛天赐传》是老舍生命初始经验的隐形书写。

A Biography ofNiu Tianci is a novel about how the hero Niu Tianci （literally, a child given by the Heaven）, an abandoned child grew up into an adult. To some extent, it can be considered as an autobiographical text by Lao She （1899 - 1968）, in which the novelist described his own inner world in the name of Niu Tianci. Compared with his other novels, essays, and autobiographical texts, Lao She had possibly told his own childhood experience in a more authentic way in this novel, from which we may find out two psychological trends of the novelist： being abandoned and being saved. In this sense, the novel can be regarded as an invisible writing of his initial experience of life.
