南通因其地理位置的特殊性,形成了以吴文化为主,以淮文化和海洋文化为辅的复合社会意识形态。南部受吴文化影响较大,装饰风格以疏朗通透为主,造型以古朴见长;北部受淮文化影响大,装饰风格以拘谨端庄为主,造型局部夸张;东部沿海地区除受吴文化影响外,又同时受到海洋文化的影响,装饰风格以热烈为主,造型以繁复见长。

Due to its peculiar situation, Nantong has formed complex cultural characteristics, composed mainly by Wu culture, as well as Huai culture and sea culture. In the south of Nantong, the architectures were affected more by Wu culture. Its decoration style focuses on permeability and transparency. In the north of Nantong, the architectures were affected more by Huai culture. The decoration style was formal and dignified. In the east of Nantong, the architectures were affected more by sea culture. Its decoration style focuses on enthusiastic and elaboration.
