The Janissary Tree, the winner of the 2007 Edgar Allen Poe Award for Best Fiction, narrates a story of usurpation that happened in the late Ottoman Empire. In the form of popular literature, this novel, however, exhibits the author' s profound knowledge of history and culture and humanist view of modernity and nationality. The present paper then explores both the commercial success of the novel and its in-depth reflection on history and culture. It also purports to investigate the novel' s aesthetic value inherent in the unity of form and content , displaying how the novel pulls together popularity, seriousness and density as a bestseller.
