As a mixed-blood Australian woman writer, Elizabeth Jolley experienced a growing sense of loneliness and estrangement, which explains her consistent concern for the marginalized. Her sympathetic narration of living at the margins of society probes into the psychological trauma of the marginalized, the loss of meaning in its cultural context and the historical roots of discrimination. In this light, Jolley' s fictional projection of her own life is not only an expression of her sympathy towards the plight of the marginalized, but also an attempt to face hardships and hope for a better life.
