至20世纪中叶起"书籍史"在欧美国家逐渐发展成为独立的研究领域,其形成过程有着多重的学术背景和复杂的产生历史,表现为多股学术流派的汇流。其中社会文化史和传统目录学是新书籍史的两个理论基石,两者在相互借鉴、批评、调整与超越的过程中走向融合,并伴随着学科史、媒介史等多学科研究的渗透和影响,最终促成了"书籍史"研究领域的诞生。

The history of books has emerged and developed as a field of study since the 1950s in the west. It is made up of many elements such as the social history, the new cultural history, Bibliography, media history, et cetera. The exchange and learning among those disciplines and theories helped to shape the history of books.
