The Awakening is a representative piece of the 19th century feminist writer Kate Chopin, the female protagonist of which is a woman with an awakening self - consciousness who tries hard to seek her true self. As a female, during her course of seeking self- consciousness, liberty and independence in the patriarehic society, Edna suffers greatly from the triple nature of one＇s self - identity, namely the contradictions and conflicts of the Freudian ＂id, ego and superego＂ forces, which make it impossible for Edna to break away with the confines of traditional social morals and values and to realize her genuine self- liberation. The only option for her is heading towards self - destruction. Her self- destruction, on one hand, dissolves her attempts and efforts to seek her self; on the other end, it symbolizes her freedom and rebirth.
