Many aspects of the current spandex downturn were clearly signaled from early 2007 onwards, although the current global economic crisis has probably intensified the problem. There is a need to take seriously medium-term demand and supply trends, even if new investors believe that they can displace existing suppliers. Although attention to such trends might not have avoided the immediate problems of the global situation, it might have set in place a more rapid recovery in spandex than currently appears possible.
