In The Dead, the contrast and paradox between life and death helps to form the basic structure and unravel the themes of this short story. By narrating how an Irish intellectual gradually arrives at self-revelation, Joyce reveals personal psycho crisis and the paralysis of social morals. The Irish society was shown to be deadly and suffocative; the relations between people and in the family were full of conflicts. The hollow Dubliners were representatives of the social paralysis and actually the dead people in the spiritual sense.
