Objective To investigate the impact of diabetes on long-term survival rate and complications in uremic patients during hemodialysis maintenance. Methods A total of 100 patients on hemodialysis maintenance at our hospital were surveyed from 1999 to 2004. All subjects were categorized into two groups according to their diabetic complications:the diabetic group and the control group. One-, three-, and five-year survival rates were evaluated and the death causes were analyzed in both groups. Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, severe infections, hypoglycemia were found as main complications. Results There were significant differences in the three-year and five-year survival rates between two groups ( P 〈 0.05 ), with more deaths from infections in the diabetic group. The incidence rates of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, severe infections, and hypoproteinemia were higher in diabetic group ( P 〈 0.05 ). Conclusion During hemodialysis maintenance, lower survival rate and higher incidence of complications are found in diabetic patients.
