BAISHOU QISHOU (something like "kowtow") is a fixed term often occurring in the inscriptions on bronze, and is a very important factor of style in such inscriptions. It bore a connotation of LI (etiquette) culture, and changed many times in varied contexts and on differing occasions, from Xia Dynasty to the Warring States period. The author holds that a study of the unearthed relics and ancient documents can help find out the trajectory of its development and evolvement. An analysis of this term used in the inscriptions of appointment in Western Zhou may help us understand the influence of LI culture in Western Zhou on the textual style of such inscriptions.
