Neanthes japonica is an abundant, deposit feeding, infaunal inhabitant of shallow water marine environments in China and Japan. N.japonica meets its nutritional requirements by swallowing large volumes of sediment. Laboratory experiments were performed to quantify the polychaete's feeding rate on natural sediment, that is, 5.71±2.76mg sediment mg -1 body dry wt d -1 , by means of gut content analysis. The reworking rate on sediment was evaluated and the gut passage time was estimated. We also examined the possibility that size selective ingestion of sediment particles by N.japonica goes against the predictions of deposit feeders optimal foraging models, that is, N.japonica intended to select larger particles. Alternative explanations, such as the particularity of adaptation to circumstances by benthic animals, may explain the feeding behavior.
