省略是语言使用中一种常见的现象，是一种特殊的替代现象。和其它的语篇衔接手段一样，省略也具有衔接语篇的功能。英汉省略现象在功能和类型上有共性，但在具体现象上也有本质性的差异：汉语是“形合”语言．英语是“意合”语言，而这些差异的造成来自于一个根本原因：英汉民族文化及思维的差异。

Ellipsis is a common phenomenon in the use of language, which is a kind of special substitution. Like any other methods of textual cohesion, ellipsis also has the function of connecting the text. The phenomena of ellipsis in English and Chinese has universalities in the functions and types, yet there are some basic differences in some specific phenomena： Chinese is a ＂ hypotaxis＂ language while English a ＂ parataxis ＂ language. And these differences result from a basic cause：the great differences of national cultures and modes of thinking between English and Chinese.
