《红字》是19世纪中期美国后期浪漫主义作家霍桑的代表作。《S.》是至今仍活跃在美国文坛的现实主义作家厄普代克的作品。厄普代克明确表示《S.》与《红字》存在着联系,且种种迹象表明《S.》对《红字》进行了戏拟,是后者的续作。本文对以上两部小说做了比较阅读及研究,分析两部小说在爱情主题的内涵上的异同及其意义,并以此为例,探讨了续作与原著之间的关系。

The Scarlet Letter was the magnum opus of Hawthorne,who was an important writer in the later period of American Romanticism in 19th century.S.is a novel written by John Updike,who keeps as an active realist writer in 20th century s American literary world.Updike clearly shows the relationship between S.and The Scarlet Letter.Through close reading of the texts,this thesis pays attention to the similarities,the difference and their significance of love theme implied in the two novels.
