A Topical Analysis of the Static Verb-Object Structure

This study explores the static verb-object structure via a topical analysis of the word order pattern. Usually, the SVO structure is assumed to be the basic word order pattern of sentences, while the static verb-object structure is regarded as a typical SVO structure. It is found, however, that Chinese, as a topic prominent language, shows an active process of topicalization in the static verb-object structure. It is also found that the process of topicalization of the object in this structure is influenced by such factors as the presence of adjuncts, semantic prominence between the verb and the object, and semantic relations between the verbs in the clause. It is concluded that vps in the static verbobject structure in modem Chinese show a tendency of nominalization.
