The Seminar on the Selection of Works for The Collection of Works by Contemporary Chinese Composers was organized by the People's Music Publishing House on August 17,2009 in Beijing. Present at the seminar were Wu Quqiang,Wang Liping,Zhao Jiping,Tan Lihua,Wang Shiguang,Bian Zushan,Guo Shan,Yu Qingxin and Song Jin as well as leaders and editors of the People's Music Publishing House. The seminar was aimed at promoting the longterm healthy development of the book series The Collection of Works by Contemporary Chinese Composers which was recently launched by the People's Music Publishing House. For the sake of its authority and seriousness, the publishing house established a special committee composed of specialists and experts in the field of music, among whom nine were granted Certificates at the seminar. The main subject of the seminar was the principle of selecting entry works. The participants discussed over the 23 candidate works recommended by the publishing house and selected by voting around ten works to be used as entry works for the Collection. The seminar was presided over by Du Xiaoshi,Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the publishing house, and Wu Bin,President of the publishing house, delivered a speech there. Wu remarked that the 55-year-old professional publishing house in the field of music, out of its sense of responsibility and concerns for protection and promotion of our own culture, launched and conducted this project at the critical moment of the company's transition and reforms for market operation, which have brought out great challenges to the company. In spite of the initial economic risks, the project has so far produced enormous positive social effects, and has also been supported economically by the government, relevant departments and social organizations as well as some musicians. Besides, the business of score leasing went better that expected. As the People's Music Publishing House is tak-ing the lead in such aspects as capital flow, book quality, publishing speed and professionalism,it is thus natural that the project in operation will be a promising one. At present, however, the key issue is the selection of works, which determines the sustainable development of the project. The initial selection was relatively easy at the beginning when there were a large amount of good works available for selection. But after two years of operation, with more recommendations from composers, the amount of works for selection is getting larger and larger so as to make the selection more difficult. In order to ensure the high quality of selected works, the publishing house hasinvited some music experts to form a special committee. The committee was composed of renowned figures in music, including conductors, critics, theorists and composers, who have better understanding of the present symphonic music in China and who have made great contributions to the country. The publishing house requested the committee members to give advice and suggestions on the long-term favourable development of the project. At the seminar,Du Xiaoshi highlighted the achievements made since the launching in 2007 and presented to the experts some ideas on the selection of works. The major achievements can be summarized in the following five aspects:1) 27 scores (for both symphony orchestra and Chinese orchestra) have been published; 2) four symphony concerts organized in cooperation with Beijing Symphony Orchestra; 3) two academic seminars entitled ″ Development and Diffusion of Chinese Symphonic Music″; 4) successful launching of score leasing business; 5) 26 works from the Collection were selected by the Information Office of the State Council into the project of National Translation and Publication of Cultural Works for exportation to Germany. Concerning the selection of works for the Collection,Du Xiaoshi made proposals in the five aspects of time of creation, composers, social recognition of selected works, styles and forms. After this, participating experts made discussions on several issues concerning the selection of works for the Collection.
