The Headquarters of the Macao SAR Government was originally a residential compound, which has also functioned as the Government House of the Portuguese authorities before the handover of the administration to the Chinese government. It is a representative example of a 19th century Macanese mansion, whose evolution reveals the development of local Portuguese style residential architecture, illustrating the changes from modest to extravagant approaches in design style. As an important government building spanning eras, it reflects the social and political status of different periods, having influential impacts on the development of architecture in Macao.
