On the Influence of Specific Historical-Cultural Context on Yan Fu and Lin Shu’s Translation

分析了近代中国特定历史文化语境对严复和林纾两位伟大的翻译家翻译目的、原著选择、语言运用以及他们的翻译方法的影响。阐明了严复和林纾翻译的社会效应,即他们的译文对当时人们思想意识形态的更新,对社会的政治、经济的改革方向以及对中国传统文化发展的反作用力。认为对译本的评论不可和这一译本产生的特定历史文化条件所决定的客观因素以及译者本人的主观意愿相分离。

Yan Fu and Lin Shu are two major translators in China＇s modem period. This thesis intends to analyze the two great translators of Modern China from a brand new perspective.It elaborates Modem China＇s historical-cultural context and illustrates its impact on Yan＇s and Lin＇s translations： their purposes of translations, their choices of the originals and their use of classical Chinese, their employment of such translation techniques as addition and deletion. Then this thesis focuses on influences of Yan＇s and Lin＇s translations, that is, the counterforce of their translations on the innovation of people＇s minds, on the promotion of political and economic reforms and on the development of China＇s traditional culture.
